Veluwe National Park is the Netherlands largest area of connected woodland. Its forest mosaic comprises of pine stands on glacial moraines, deciduous beech and oak woodland, coniferous plantation and sand dunes all bordering fertile agricultural lands. Such a landscape harbours 1000's of fungal species from parasitic to mutualistic!
The world of fungi is starting to enter the public consciousness in a big way and on this day tour you will learn about its essential role in all our lives and more importantly its interconnected role in natures diverse ecosystems. A woodland is often seen through tree-centric eyes, it is of course a world of green but new science is teaching us to look at it from a fungi-centric view due to the astounding discoveries that are being made about its ability to literally web together a whole network of species to form the forest you see before you. There are fungi that partner with plants and there are fungi that hunt plants, both contribute to the balance of nature and are intrinsic to the web of life itself. On this tour we will also learn how to identify fungi via their anatomy and needles to say a stove and pan will be on hand to cook up an edible morsels we come across! This is the perfect time to join for a walk in the moist pine woodlands and learn about the wonder of fungi.
